Summer
Traveling can lead to urological problems
Summer is almost here, and many people are making travel plans to fun destinations across the country. While it’s said that “travel is good for the soul,” it can also get you out of your routine, which can stress your body and cause problems for your urinary system.
Travelers tend to drink less water than normal. They may move more and sweat more. They may not eat as healthy as they do at home.
Time zone changes can disrupt sleep routines, and vacation schedules can disrupt normal physical activity and workout routines.
All these changes can lead to urologic problems for both children and adults. The most common problems people face when on the road can be constipation, urinary tract infections (UTIs) and kidney stones. Travel can also make some urinary problems worse or harder to handle, such as an overactive bladder and urinary incontinence.
Kidney stones more common in summer
When temperatures soar in summer, we see an increase in patients suffering from kidney stones. It happens every year.
Dehydration is the primary culprit. When we sweat more to cool down, our bodies lose essential fluids. If we don’t replenish these fluids adequately by drinking water, urine becomes more concentrated. This creates an ideal environment for the formation of kidney stones, which are hard deposits made of minerals and acid salts.
But watch what you drink to hydrate. Sugary beverages like soda and sweet tea can compound the problem because sugar is linked to kidney stone formation.
The best thing to do is drink lots of water.
Diet also plays a role. Summer barbecues and outdoor gatherings often feature foods high in protein and sodium, which can also contribute to kidney stone formation.
To reduce the risk of kidney stones, we recommend staying hydrated, limiting sugary drinks and salty foods, and eating a balanced diet.

Be prepared for summer travel
Stay aware of what you eat, drink, and how you get your routine workouts and sleep. Also, make sure to pack enough medications or other supplies you may need.
Here are some tips …
Stay Hydrated: It helps prevent constipation, UTIs and kidney stones. It also helps keep many other bodily functions working well.
Eat Well: Travelers may not always have access to healthy meals. So it’s important not to forget your fruits and vegetables, as well as foods high in fiber.
Sleep Right: Live in the time zone you’re visiting from the very first day. You can nap, but try to get on a healthy sleep routine on the first night.
Keep those tips in mind so you can minimize any urological issues you may face and make the most out of your stay. And if you want to make an appointment before you go, call us at (731) 427-9971.
